Planned Communities

Planned communities is a broad term used to describe any a town or neighborhood that is built with guidelines and common goals. This is a trend that began in the late 19th century as more and more towns began popping up. Today, planned communities might come in the form of a new municipality or even a sub-division within a city. The people who live there agree to abide by common rules in order to further the goals of all of the community's residents. In many cases, these communities will appoint board members to discuss the future goals of the community and the best ways to achieve those goals. People who live in planned communities often give up some of the autonomy that goes along with individual home ownership. Though these people still have the power to make some of their own decisions, they also have to abide by the community's standards and aims.
